Having a broad range of interpersonal skills makes us more effective organizational participants, and better friends, colleagues and members of society/community.
This individual assignment contributes to your personal effectiveness and organizational efficiency by helping you identify, develop and improve, and discuss the interpersonal skills in your repertoire.

Timeframe and Deliverables
The ?Interpersonal Skills Project? builds over 4 weeks and involves the co-operation and participation of 1 personal acquaintance and 1 professional associate outside of Capilano University. You will submit a Formal Journal of your progress over these 4 weeks, and you will give a 4 minute presentation on your discoveries.
Instructions
Identifying
Following the timelines and activities listed on next page, you will solicit the observations of two people regarding your interpersonal skills. You should solicit one friend/family member for a casual/intimate perspective, and one professional person for a perspective related to your potential work habits. You will give each of these people an electronic copy of an Interpersonal Skills Template (Moodle) which they will complete and return to you. The template asks them to select from a list what they see as your 4 strongest and 4 weakest interpersonal skills based on what they know of you, and comment on same where applicable. You will also complete this template yourself.
You will then review and compare all 3 completed templates together. You will perform a subjective analysis of the list of skills from all 3 sheets, and choose a final set of 4 strong and 4 weak interpersonal skills that resonate most with you. You will record this final set of each group of 4 in your journal.
Developing and Improving
Next, you will set to work on a plan to improve the weaker set of skills ? your areas for growth. You will use measurable means to observe the action you take toward improvement. You will record your progress and improvement and/or challenges as you apply them to real life situations of your choosing.
Your final deliverables include a Formal Journal which documents your discoveries, development and progress, and an Oral Presentation. Given the timelines, the end result is not about ?changing? your behaviour in such a short time, but gaining a clear understanding of what you want to improve over the coming months, and effectively setting up the goals for change. You will use SMART goals and behaviour modification techniques to effect change in your life. You will be able to continue using your techniques and journal to monitor your progress through the term.
Please follow the timeline and task-oriented activities on the next page for best success. Please use the headings of each section in the ?Task? column as the headings in your Formal Journal. Each of the bullet points in the chart comprise the content of your journal entries; use these as content guidelines, or to create subheadings for your journal entries. Record the dates that you worked on each section, even if you follow a different schedule than the weekly schedule suggested. Be honest ? you will learn more about yourself!
The formatting component of any document adds to the readability and visual appeal. You determine the format of your Formal Journal.

What if I am concerned about sharing and talking about my ?weak skills??
Your weak skills DO NOT make you a weak person. KNOWING your weak skills strengthens your ability to communicate effectively both personally and professionally.
This is an opportunity for you to challenge yourself in a way only you can. The more you understand your own weaknesses in communication, the stronger your communication becomes. People tend to focus on what they already do well to bolster their sense of self. This is a challenge to bolster your sense of self by attending to areas of growth without judging yourself while you?re at it! No judging here.
Notes:
1. What is a formal journal?
a. For our purposes, this means a systematic and logical recording of chosen behaviours for improvement, including: measurable techniques applied, outcomes attained, and personal experiences encountered.
b. Use headings and subheadings to help guide the organization of your work.
c. The language can be informal and in sentences, tables or point form, as long as all the content requirements are met.
d. Apply consistent formatting and cover for your document.

2. What are SMART goals?
a. See pp 140 in text
b. Use internet to investigate what is meant by SMART goals. Each of the weak skills chosen needs to be put into SMART goal format before you begin your application of a measurable technique for improvement.
c. Example: weak skill ? listening, not interrupting, not assuming content

i. Too vague ? when I am talking with people, I will listen to them before I speak (not measurable)
ii. Needs improvement ? when communicating with people at work I will listen carefully to what they are saying before I respond (still not measurable)
iii. Good – when receiving instructions from my supervisor, I will listen for 1 minute before responding. (measurable)
iv. Excellent – when receiving instructions from my supervisor, I will listen for 1 minute before responding, and if the person finishes speaking before 1 minute is up, I will ask a question first, before responding. (measurable)

3. What is a measurable technique?
a. For our purposes, the main meaning of measurable technique is a technique which is clear enough that you will know when it is complete; for example, you should be able to put a check mark (or gold star ?) beside it if you have done it today. Usually a technique is measurable when it has some indication of a time limit or task completion. By following the SMART goal method above, your techniques should naturally be measurable.

i. SMART Goal – when receiving instructions from my supervisor, I will listen for 1 minute before responding, and if the person finishes speaking before 1 minute is up, I will ask a question first, before responding. (measurable)
ii. Measurable technique ? every time I listen to my supervisor for up to one minute without interrupting, I will log it in a table in my journal. I will have a separate category in my table for logging each time I ask a question. I will ensure the date is noted each time I collect my data.
iii. Rewards ? I will give myself a gold star every time I ask 3 questions in a day. When I have 5 gold stars, I will buy myself a tea.
iv. Sometimes a measurable technique provides its own natural reward. Sometimes people are satisfied by these, and sometimes they need more ? it varies with individuals and circumstances. There is no ?right way?; the key is to know what is valuable to the person and what will motivate.
